Are there differences between private and public colleges and universities?

No. Carry license holders may carry on post-secondary school property with permission from the institution.

What can students do to appeal for their Second Amendment rights if they are on an unfriendly campus?

Students have the opportunity to advocate for their right to carry a firearm by appealing to school officials. It would be in the best interest for students to work towards establishing a positive relationship with their campus in regard to permitting the carry of firearms. Students may also contact legislators to request public officials to pass legislation to enforce campus carry in the state rather than leave it optional.

What would the penalty be if a student is found with a weapon on campus grounds?

Students could be charged with a Class C misdemeanor for violation of Code of Alabama Title 13A Chapter 11 Section 61.2, resulting in up to $500 in fines and 3 months of jail time.

For campuses who would allow campus carry but are prevented from doing so by their state law, what are some things the university can do to aid students?

All campuses in Alabama have the opportunity to permit campus carry and are not prevented by law from doing so.
