Summary

Mr. and Mrs. Caniglia were having a marital dispute, which both testify never developed into violence and neither felt threatened by the other. Mrs. Caniglia spent the night in a motel, and called the police to do a wellness check when Mr. Caniglia didn't return her call. The police arrived and interviewed Mr. Caniglia and testified he acted calmly and fully cooperated with them. They asked to take him to the hospital for a a psychiatric evaluation and he agreed on condition they not confiscate any of his firearms. The police officers agreed, but lied to him. After Mr. Caniglia left for the hospital, one office went into his home confiscated two of his handguns, as well as his magazines and ammunition. After making its way from the First Circuit to the Supreme Court, GOA and GOF wrote an amicus brief arguing the state violated Mr. Caniglia's Second Amendment rights - as well as his Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights.
